This weekend I had a fun shoot with a couple of friends. We walked around their places and basically stopped where I saw something interesting. That’s the kind of photography that’s fun. It’s kind of spontaneous and makes portraiture a mix of traditional portraiture and a photo walk, both of which I love, but not as much as bastard child of the two.

To get this shot, we had to climb down a short steep slope. I put a light on my tripod because the legs are able to handle more diverse terrain than any light stand. The rocks were a mix of stable and quite wobbly, so it was pretty scary walking around to set the light up and get myself into position. There’s only one artificial light and it’s off the left side of the frame. The sun is a giant natural rim light.

This is the mushy shot of our collection.

50/50 There’s nothing to say about this. It’s my shoe rack that has my more commonly worn sneakers. It’s part of my 50/50.

Netflix… Save me, you’re my only hope. That’s what the mail system is saying. That is the only Star Wars reference I will ever make. Long live Star Trek.

The cost to send mail seem to be going up a LOT. It’s almost a buck to send a piece of paper to someone. The only real reason that mail still exists is so you can get your Netflix dvds and hand written thank you cards. At some point the etiquette gods will decide good manners isn’t worth a small fortune and that email is the new mail. Hell, you could still hand write your emails, just take a picture of that fancy card and attach it the actual email so whoever you’re thanking knows you took the time to pick out and hand write a thank you.

Tangents aside. Here is my next 50/50 installment. My current mail cubby is definitely retro-cool.

I just got the Nikon AF-S 50mm, so I’m pretty happy about that. It’s much sharper than the old AF-D, that I sold along with my 20mm and 35mm, to finance this purchase.

Awhile ago my friend Jodie and I decided to start this 50/50 project (50 days of photos with the 50mm) but I got lazy after about 3 days. I’m not going to promise I won’t get lazy this time, but I’m going to give it another go.

It’s kind of funny how perception works. When something is new it looks cool, modern and cutting edge. As that thing ages, our opinion of it changes. It often seems to look old and out of date. Newer, more modern items come along and we choose those newer better models over the old models. Many of the things we stop using get discarded, but a few make it long enough to become classics and they are reborn as retro-cool.

It’s time to get back into the gym. I’ve been pretty lazy the past half year or so, but now that’s all about to end. I had to restar the books because I lost so much stength that it’s not reasonable to use where I left off as a goal to beat, but that’s ok. It’s just good to be back on it.

Blogging

It’s been a long time since I blogged, but I think I’ll start this new one, mostly as a photo blog. The format will primarily be: post a picture, write about said picture. The writings may be in the form of technical/artistic dicussion or talking about the broader context of the photo.
